Intolerance

The news media focuses on the sensational instead of the many real problems this country faces. The current flap over building a Mosque at Ground Zero is completely irrational. Not only that, it is counter productive. The Imam, Faisel Abdul Rauf, (an American citizen) in charge of the project is from Soufey branch of Islam that preaches tolerance, love and peace. It is as far from being a terrorist organization as you can get. It is reported that Osama bin Laden hated this Imam. So by objecting to a man who would have a good influence on young Muslims, the purveyors of hate are actually doing the terrorists a favor.

How to make an enemy:

Be disrespectful.
Be critical
Ignore their plight
Be intolerant

So what is gained by trying to deny the freedom guaranteed in our Constitution to a religious group? In doing so we have provided another fertile breeding ground for young impressionable Muslims to hate us.

Many have blogged on this subject including Tom Degan's Rant, Bird's On a Wire, and Citizen K. All are well worth reading .

Here is a link to a different perspective on this subject from Bob Cesca in International Clearing House. He makes the case for the hypocrisy of calling ground zero 'hallowed ground' as the reason to deny the Muslims the right to build near the Twin Towers disaster.

I give up. I have deleted the font size in Html 3 time and blogspot is determined to make the font large. I hate you blog spot.

And now for a funny take on the whole issue. Jon Stewart does it better than any serious post. You will love this video. Sorry I had to embed the whole show.

I haven't read Cesca's post on Ground Zero but I am taking great offense to that as a name for that place. To me it puts far too much weight on that. Well I wrote about it all at my 'political' blog and won't write more here but it is a big deal and very important because it is about who we are as a people. The fear and hate that is spewing out doesn't make me feel good as to what the answer to that might be.

Thanks for the link to Bob Cesca's wonderfully reasoned trip through the controversy. The comments there are a window into crazed minds who seem to have given up responsible citizenship for noise-making.

*Rain - This has been a busy time for me and blogging has been a 'hit and miss' proposition. I will get to your political blog soon.

*Naomi dagen bloom - You are so right!!!

I kind of like the large print myself. Less strain on the old eyes.

Good piece, Darlene. As we've all said so many times, the people who should be reading this kind of thing ain't.

*tnlib - Yes, I just keep preaching to the choir.

I loved the links. So much like what happens over here!

Darlene said...

*Xtreme English - I try to keep my scoops true, but I can be misled at times. I don't think I was this time.

*Rummuser - Politicians are the same the world over, I fear. Too bad !!!

You are so right, Darlene. I copied a cartoon I saw today about it, and I will put it on the blog or FB soon.

Darlene said...

*Kenju - I will watch for the cartoon. It is really a joke that we are talking about that instead of the economy, isn't it?

The disconnect between what is happening in people's everyday lives and what they are seeing on the tube is getting to be hilarious.
This so-called controversy, cooked up by the right wing noise machine, isn't worth even thinking about.

Darlene said...

*Hattie - Of course, that's the object of the Faux noise machine. While all the focus is on a 'non story' they aren't talking about the failure of the Republican party to do anything right. It's a real smoke screen.

Everyone acts so much on impulse and do not look into the freedoms our Constitution allows. They want freedom to worship, but not for everyone, only if they worship AS THEY DO!!!! I appreciate your posts.

*Beverly - Thank you.

I am very impressed on your country at the time a black person (Barack Obama) became the President of America, and I have written my impression to your country at:
http://love-ely.blogspot.com/2008/11/president-barack-obama-musing-from-usa.html

and now ... by allowing the construction of a mosque at "Ground Zero", this makes me amazed for a second time to your country.

*tikno - Thank you for your visit. I do hope you will come back. I have visited your blog and will return.

We have our share of idiots who are not happy with Obama and would like to stop any mosque building in the U. S., but most of us are tolerant and without bias.

The good news was at your last sentence.

PS: I have tried to subscribe to your blog via my Google Reader so I can read your upcoming posts but I don't know why it always fail along with an error message like this: "The feed being requested cannot be found"

Darlene said...

*tikno - Others have complained of this issue also and I don't know how to resolve it. It's frustrating.

Thank you for the link to the Jon Stewart’s show. I was away at the time and I missed it. I was in Europe at the time and people there could not figure out what is going on in the US - why are people here so intolerant and bigoted.

Darlene said...

*Vagabonde - The Europeans aren't the only ones wondering why there are so many bigoted and intolerant people here. Many of us in the U.S. are wondering that same thing.
