Saturday's Rally by Glenn Oafish

I tried to embed the funny video on Colbert Nation about Glenn Beck's Saturday Rally. I'm sorry that I was unable to do so. If you go to that Web Site you can watch it and I think you would agree it's worth a little effort. Here's the link.

I find it obscene that Beck is using the same steps on the same monument on the same day as the anniversary of Martin Luther King's famous speech. Lest we forget the difference between a man of love, compassion and intellect and a buffoon like Glenn Beck, following are two quotes from Dr. King's speech.

"A myth that gets around is the idea that legislation cannot really solve the problem and that it has no great role to play in this period of social change because you've got to change the heart and you can't change the heart through legislation. You can't legislate morals. The job must be done through education and religion. Well, there's half-truth involved here. Certainly, if the problem is to be solved then in the final sense, hearts must be changed. Religion and education must play a great role in changing the heart. But we must go on to say that while it may be true that morality cannot be legislated, behavior can be regulated. It may be true that the law cannot change the heart but it can restrain the heartless. It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me but it can keep him from lynching me and I think that is pretty important, also. So there is a need for executive orders. There is a need for judicial decrees. There is a need for civil rights legislation on the local scale within states and on the national scale from the federal government."

"In spite of the difficulties of this hour, I am convinced that we have the resources to make the American Dream a reality. I am convinced of this because I believe Carlyle is right: "No lie can live forever." I am convinced of this because I believe William Cullen Bryant is right: "Truth pressed to earth will rise again." I am convinced of this because I think James Russell Lowell is right: "Truth forever on the scaffold, Wrong forever on the throne; Yet that scaffold sways the future, And behind the dim unknown, Standeth God within the shadow, Keeping watch above His own." Somehow with this faith, we will be able to adjourn the councils of despair and bring new life into the dark chambers of pessimism. With this faith, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation to a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. This will be a great day. This will be the day when all of God's children, black [people] and white [people], Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, 'Free at last! Free at last! Thank God, Almighty, we are free at last!'"

I'm furious.

I'm hoping no one shows up, but I know that won't happen.

*tnlib - Well, someone besides his rabid loyal followers will hear this idiot speak and it may be the end of him. One can only hope.

*Paula - It may not be the crowd that he is expecting. It will be interesting to see how many are willing to spend money to see this clown.

Jon Stewart took him on, too! Some people have no respect.

Do we have language to describe behavior that is beyond obscenity? What would it take for this meglomaniac to be institutionalized before his chaotic behavior encourages more dimwits to follow him?

I was sure people will turn out. I really interested to see what Faux News and their ilk 'estimate' the crowds at and what the actual numbers are. I am already disturbed by some of the quotes in the news by people interviewed at the event. Such as "The President is a communist" and (of Beck) "He's an honest man" (really?!?) and the country is "on the verge of a civil war" over immigration. One of my favorites is a dope - sorry - citizen of my state accusing Scott Brown of "stabbing us in the back" because of his support of the financial regulation bill. I am sorry to say, but I think we are in big trouble from these people listening to the voices in their heads.

*Kay Dennison - Jon Stewart is my favorite. He's always great.

*Naomie Dagen Bloom - There is language to describe it, but my Mom would rise from her grave to wash my mouth out with soap if I used it. :-)

*Barry - I'm anxious to see what the talking heads have to say. (Not that they're ever right.)

I am right there with you....
I liked Jon Stewart's take on it....you may not like his humor, but, I was laughing so much!

Beck scares the holy hell-o out of me. He's friggin' insane or totally stupid...or maybe both. You just know there will be people showing up to hear his rantings. Dear God!!

Thanks for posting this, Darlene.
It has been a dark day. I will go check out the Colbert clip now. :)

Thanks for the MLK quotes. They remind us what an inspirational speaker does with words. He/she pushes us toward peace and unity, not hatred and division.

hilarious clip!!

What a banal man.

Darlene said...

*Beverly - I love Jon Stewart's humor. A point made with humor is so much more effective than a rant and Jon always 'nails it.'

*Joy - Well, the usual crowd showed up, but I don't think he gained any converts.

*Lydia - I hope the clip brightened your day.

*Paula - You are so right. Beck's attempt at preaching religion would be laughable if it weren't so sickening.

*Xtreme English - Wan't it though?

*Hattie - I love the word you uesd. Yes, Beck is very banal.

As I read the quotes, I could hear his voice. Magnificent.

Apparently the turnout was much less than the initial hype.

Darlene said...

*K - Not only that, but to my great joy the specials on Katrina eclipsed the news coverage of Beck's farcial show.

I have been away from the web, Darlene, and have been missing my friends there, but I am rewarded on my return with your moving post. I just read the quote from Martin Luther King and am happy to feel that there are still those who remember the days when evil did not co-opt good and turn it into a revolting sham.

Darlene said...

*20th Century Woman - It can make you yearn for the days of hope, can't it?

At least we now know that not as many showed up as Beck would like us to think showed up.

The man really has no conscious but we all knew that already.

*la peregrina - and half of those on the Mall were probably tourists.

Darlene,

What has been interesting since the Beck debacle is the vast differences in the crowd estimates.

CBS and the capital Police said 89,000 attended the rally.Chris Matthews estimated 100,000, then Sarah Palin upped that to 1.6 million and today,Michele Bachmann crowed (Good choice of words there) that there were more than 3 million there..

What have you heard?

Tabor said...

The whole idiotic rally just tied up traffic. It morphed into a religious meeting I heard instead of a civil right rally. The estimate was that 87,000 idiots live in this country.

Kay Dennison said...

I was so angry I couldn't begin to blog about it. What an insult to Lincoln's legacy!

Darlene said...

*Tabor - Amazing how many dolts live in the U.S., isn't it?

*Kay - Not only to Lincoln's legacy, but to Martin Luther King's as well. Grrrrr.

Celia said...

Obscene is right. And the 87,000 being inflated to 1 1/2 million is such a prime example of the rhetoric. I am sorely embarrassed that this buffoon hails from my state. I haven't recovered from the country electing Bush Jr. twice and I see even the most un-political of us (that would be me) need to speak up to those peddling this dementia.

Celia said...

Oops, got excited, meant elected Bush jr at all and then re-elected him.

Darlene said...

*Celia - We have some real buffoons in my state, too. Since I never watch Faux news I hadn't heard that they doubled the count, but it's no surprise. They should be called "The place of the unfair and unbalanced
entertainers who can't entertain.

Barry said...

Ok, Darlene... Just saw some of the AZ Governor candidates 'debate'. Um, is Jan Brewer ok? I am concerned! I mean, what the HECK was that??? How in the WORLD can she possibly win?

Darlene said...

*Barry - Wasn't that just awful? She will win, though. Terry Goddard is liberal and this is a very red state. Last I heard Brewer was 20 points ahead. We do have a lot of dumb right wing whackos in the Phoenix and rural areas and a few in Tucson.

Vagabonde said...

I think the people listening to Beck and Palin are scared people who want to go back to a time which never was. They are frustrated, ignorant, mean, selfish and afraid. Not a nice picture to show the world as an example of an American citizen.

Darlene said...

*Vagabonde - I think you're right. What a shame !!!
